Upcoming 2021 Ford Puma ST drops padding and finally showing production look. This practical but small car comes as a three-cylinder performance SUV designed to refresh the small city SUV segment. We can’t say that the competition is overly fierce Nisan Juke, Volkswagen T-Roc and Hyundai Kona but the market is not big either. Quite fast and fuel efficient with an affordable price can find its place primarily in Europe.
For those who do not know this model enough, let’s just say it first appeared in September 1997 as a sport compact crossover. Ford division in Europe was built exclusively at Ford’s Niehl plant in Cologne, Germany. Unfortunately the model did not find its customers and production was discontinued.
Go Further event in Amsterdam marked the revived Puma nameplate as competition for the subcompact crossover segment. Shortly after the basic model, the first more powerful editions had already begun. Tests are time consuming and although there is plenty of time left to release 2021 Ford Puma skillful reporters captured a couple of shots during test in Nürburgring.
2021 Ford Puma ST – Exterior and interior
First pictures from test drive indicate some changes though there are signs primary styling cues from Fiesta. Changes coming in the side skirts, a spoiler at the back, at least 18 inches wheels, small diffuser, new rear spoiler, differently styled grille, new bumper, and large exhaust tips.
As we wait for the first pictures of the interior we can speculate on it. One should not expect big differences here compared to Fiesta. However, more space leaves room for an ifferently positioned screen, for example. The Sync 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay integration with digital display instead of the analog gauge cluster is a must! ST badges on the steering wheel, red stitching, leather upholstered sports seat and 450 liters in trunk should be enough for this class.
We can expect to vehicle run something similar already seen at Fiesta ST. Of course I’m talking about three-cylinder EcoBoost engine with 200 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. This would be sufficient to deliver speed up 0-100 km/h under 7 seconds. Combination with dual clutch automatic transmission and fuel consumption of 46 mpg provide competitive potential for upcoming Ford Puma ST. Of course you should expect some manual gearbox option, first of all mean on six speed transmission.
This is not all about change. A bit more weight in combination with more clearance and higher driving position upcoming SUV provides more compared to Fiesta ST. Considerably upgraded chassis and suspension with bigger dampers and springs need to reduce the pitch. Well known suspension system in Fiesta model should be borrowed to provide apply vectoring forces to the rear suspension with main goal to increased lateral stiffness.
Release date and price
It is still ungrateful to talk about the exact realization date of this model. The fact is, it comes as a model for 2021. All indications are that we can expect an exciting deal that can be reminiscent of the advent of the Nissan Juke about ten years ago. The price should be easier to predict, suppose it could be around $ 30,000 which is no small difference to the Ford Fiesta ST edition. It is also certain that there will probably be no model for the US market. The overriding goal being Europe, above all England. Still, there’s plenty of time for that to change, perhaps, and let’s see it on American asphalt
