First of all, for those who don’t know, I have to say that Genesis is a luxury division of the well-known Korean manufacturer Hyundai. Upcoming 2021 Genesis GV80 is their first luxury SUV under Genesis brand. Its main competitor will be the German Holy Trinity: Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE.
The concept was introduced in 2017 in New York. Designs from Germany, Korea and America worked on its design. The good news is that a commercial vehicle has all the still characteristics of the concept.
Genesis GV80 Concept and Comercial Design
Physically speaking, the concept is dominated by a large grill and aggressive side skirts. Attention is further drawn to the roof rack, sporty headlamps, two-piece taillights and a larger rear window. Particularly powerful are these slim LED headlights. As you can see, there are no major deviations from the concept.
2021 Genesis GV80 Luxury Interior
Luxury cabin is a mix of aluminum, fine goat and wood on one side and high tech on the other. The center console is quite large and extends between drivers and front passengers. The command panel is wide, amazing 22 inches. However, a modern multimedia system with everything that goes perfectly will pair with German models. Ventilation openings are hardly visible because they are discreetly positioned. Another important thing is the touch keys and the physical dots that will control various functions such as climate.
As drive units, we should see several engine versions that will be offered depending on the market. Domestic market will have turbocharged 3.0 L V-6 diesel with 278 horses and 590 N/m of torque. Acceleration from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) for 6.8 seconds while power transmission is an automatic with 8 speed. Somewhat stronger is the gasoline also from the V-6 family but 3.5 L with 380 horses and 520 N/m of torque. Its acceleration is for 5.7 seconds.
Some markets will have a four cylinder engine with 2.5 L. This gasoline with power of 304 horses and 422 N/m of torque has acceleration for 6.9 seconds. The strongest option could be 5.0 L V-8 with 420 horses and 383 pound-feet of torque.
The American market will not have a manual transmission. Also the basic offer will be rear wheel drive. It will be optional to drive all the wheels. We must say that it is seriously considered about plug-in hybrid or an evolution of the hydrogen fuel cell electric technology. Genesis plans to combine eco-friendly performance and SUV capability.
Release date and price
The global car show has had the opportunity to see the concept during 2017. Sales of the commercial version will begin in early 2020 in Korea. A little later that year, it will expand to the rest of the market. The price is unknown, but when you look at competing models it will certainly not be less than $66,000 for base model.
