2022 Ford Expedition Release Date, Redesign, & Hybrid. In November last year, Ford’s new four-year labor agreement with UAW confirmed that a new Ford Expedition is in the pipeline. Recent media reports suggest that a 2022 Ford Expedition Hybrid is being tested on the roads now, to become part of the restyled family.

The fourth-gen Ford Expedition that went on sale in the fall of 2017 is set to receive a cosmetic uplift for the 2022 model year. Along with minor style changes, a hybrid-electric powertrain is also coming to the full-size SUV. A Motor1 reader spotted a 2022 Ford Expedition Hybrid prototype on test in January, and according to their report, the full-size SUV could employ the PowerBoost hybrid powertrain of the 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid.

The 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid employs the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that works in tandem with a 35 kW electric motor, which is powered by a small 1.5 kWh Lithium-ion battery. The electrified engine offers 430 horsepower and 570 lb.-ft. of torque, and is linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission in the 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid. With the PowerBoost system, the hybrid pickup truck gets a maximum towing capacity of 12,700 lbs.

With the facelift, the high-end trims of the 2022 Expedition may upgrade to the more fuel-efficient, electrified EcoBoost engine. Basic trims could continue using the conventional 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine (375 hp/470 lb.-ft.), which is also offered with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

On the layout front, the 2022 Ford Expedition (and its hybrid variant) may have subtle changes but significant interior revisions. A spy picture published on Motor Authority shows Ford engineers testing the 2022 Expedition with a new, fully digital instrument cluster, and also a portrait touchscreen replacing the traditional center console. The next-gen SYNC (SYNC 4), already available in the Mustang Mach-E, the 2021 F-150, and the 2021 Bronco, will likely be part of the 2022 Expedition’s new interior. The prototype likely featured the range-topping version of SYNC 4 with the monumental 15.5-inch display.
